Feel welcome to the FB group Tinnitus / Tinnitus / Hyperacusis First Aid, founded by experts by experience with tinnitus and / or hyperacusis. This group is especially for fellow sufferers who still have questions and for whom tinnitus ( and/or hyperacusis ) is still completely new.
Tinnitus is a symptom of about 200 known causes. Hyperacusis from about 50 known causes. To put your mind at ease already, tinnitus almost never has a life-threatening cause.
Always look for the cause, which you do through the route GP / ENT and audiological examination with measurement of an audiogram. Hearing loss is still the biggest cause and that can usually be determined with an audiogram.
Some causes are readily treatable. If the cause cannot be found or remedied and the tinnitus has become chronic, there are excellent therapies that can be followed to turn a “problem” tinnitus into a tinnitus that causes you little discomfort. These therapies teach you to begin to view the tinnitus sound as a bodily sound that still evokes little or no negative emotion. When you achieve that, the tinnitus is no longer a problem at all.
Be sure to read the posts in the “featured messages” at the top of the page, you can find a lot of info there. Stay far away from the exceptionally negative stories on the Internet, that won’t get you anywhere. Better read the “positive stories” post. And also like to read our poll during which activities other fellow sufferers are least bothered by their tinnitus. You might discover a new activity among them.
Participation in the group is only possible with recognizable profile picture and your real name. Fake profiles will be removed. Always treat each other with respect even in case of disagreements. Participation of persons or companies referring to commercial websites or promoting medication and therapies are not allowed.
Posts about causes, therapies and/or devices that have no medical scientific evidence of efficacy will be removed.
